Obesity – The Greatest Epidemic Of The 21st Century!

It has been long discussed the effects of obesity on children and adults in the 21st century. But there is also a clear reason as to why it is called the greatest epidemic of the 21st century.

The problem is that out of the entire human population, nearly 2.1 billion adults are considered to be obese, a statistic from Wikipedia. Nearly 1 person in 5 is considered to be obese in our time (almost 31% of the total population), and that holds heavy consequences. But was it always like this? The answer is no, as obesity has been on a trend on the rise ever since 1980, where 850 million were considered to be obese out of the total population.

If we take the numbers and calculate based on gender, in Europe, 26% of males and 34% of the female population are obese. The statistics aren’t the same in every country, but more people are obese in more developed countries.

Obesity also comes with a tool on our healthcare system; as nearly $300 billion are spent on costs associated with obesity in both the United States and their northern neighbor Canada. So based on this, we can safely say that obesity also is bad for a countries healthcare system.

Here are some factors that should be taken into consideration when discussing obesity:

1. Poor Diet

Probably the biggest factor that contributes towards a person being overweight is his diet. You cannot get overweight by night, it takes time to develop and reach a certain stage where you can be considered obese. Poor diet is the biggest factor, and it can be categorized by:

Eating Processed Food

Processed food, or fast food, is extremely high in fat and sugar which are two ingredients that our body takes a hard time eliminating if not exercising. Eating processed food also has a high chance of you developing major health issues such as diabetes, according to reports. Since processed foods are so addictive to the ordinary human, a way of battling the effects should be found. That’s the reason as to why people turn their attention towards diet pills. Drinking Alcohol, and Sugary Drinks

Another major poor lifestyle choice that contributes towards your poor diet is drinking excessive amounts of sugary drinks and alcohol. Both are equally bad when taken in large quantities. Alcohol not only contains a lot of calories, but it can also damage your liver if you drink too much of it. Sugary drinks, on the other hand, are called that since they contain large amounts of sugar in them.

2. Lack of Physical Activity

You can eat fast foods, drink alcohol, and binge eat for all you want, as long as you do some physical activities to neglect the effects of them. Many people have jobs and chores throughout the day so they cannot afford to go to the gym. However, instead of driving to work, perhaps you could take a walk? Walking or cycling is considered a physical activity, and the effects it can have on your body are tremendously beneficial.

3. Calories

Calories are what we measure the energy value of each food we eat. An average adult man needs around 2,500 calories per day to satisfy, while the average adult woman around 2,000 calories. Anything higher than the average amount will end up being stored in your body fat. And one way to burn calories is by doing physical activities.
