Un grupo de ciudadanos e intelectuales del pequeno Estado noreamericano reivindica su indpenednencia del Gobierno federal CARLOS FRESNEDA Corresponsal
NUEVA YORK.– Vermont es conocido por el sirope de arce, los hela-dos de Ben & Jerry y el talante progresista de su gente. Fue el primer lugar del nuevo mundo donde se prohibió la esclavitud, también el pionero en la legalización de las uniones civiles entre homosexuales y el único en mandar a Washington un senador socialista.
Un nutrido grupo de ciudadanos e intelectuales aspira ahora a poner Vermont en el mapa como la Suiza de Norteamérica, limitando al norte con Canadá y desgajada de una unión de la que se sienten cada vez más ajenos y lejanos.
«La secesión es un acto radical de rebeldía, pero no nos han dado otra opción», declara a EL MUNDO el profesor Thomas Naylor, ideólogo del grupo.
«No reivindicamos nuestra diferencia cultural o lingüística, como Quebec, sino nuestra capacidad de decisión. No podemos sufragar una guerra como la de Irak, ni contribuir al colapso energético y climático. El sistema no tiene solución: el imperio que hemos ayudado a crear es moral, política y económicamente insostenible».
Naylor es el autor del manifiesto La Segunda República de Vermont, que ha puesto en marcha el movimiento. El 13% de la población del pequeño Estado (600.000 habitantes) se muestra favorable a la «independencia», según una encuesta de la Universidad de Vermont. Circula ya una revista consagrada a la causa –Vermont Commons– y existe un lugar de peregrinaje: la tienda Riverwalk Records de la capital Montpelier, donde venden por 20 dólares (15 euros) las populares camisetas de US out of VT! (¡Estados Unidos fuera de Vermont!).
El propietario de la tienda, Jacob Grossi, se ha convertido en el rostro del grupo: «Las camisetas se venden como rosquillas y recibimos más muestras de simpatía que de rechazo. No sé hasta dónde llegaremos, pero al menos hemos puesto la opción sobre la mesa». ‘

La reivindicación ha llegado hasta el Washington Post, donde los secesionistas Frank Bryan e Ian Baldwin escribieron sobre La pasada y futura República de Vermont.El plan de acción, con la vista puesta en 2012, consiste en la campaña de las 200 ciudades, las que deberían aprobar una resolución para plantar batalla enWashington.
«Se resuelve que el Estado de Vermont se libera pacífica y democráticamente de los Estados Unidos de América y vuelve al estatus de república independiente que tuvo entre 1777 y 1791». La petición circula ya por internet y se está propagando por el espinazo de las Montañas Verdes, emblema de este Estado con un tamaño similar al de la Comunidad Valenciana.
En Burlington, Vermont, se celebró en otoño la Convención Separatista, auspiciada por el activista Kirkpatrick Sale y a la que asistieron representantes de 16 organizaciones, desde New Hampshire a Texas, pasando por Carolina del Sur o Hawai.
«El movimiento lo están impulsando los ciudadanos y abarca todo el espectro político», dice Sale.
«En el sur son más próximos al Partido Republicano y en el noreste están a la izquierda del Partido Demócrata, pero el convencimiento es elmismo: no podemos seguir sosteniendo un Gobierno federal corrupto, incompetente e irrelevante».
